Un Cubano Libre

FOR THE PRESS

If you are writing about Cuba, here is what you need

Who I am, what I can speak about with authority, how to verify it, and how to reach me. No gatekeeping.

In one line

Rafael A. Gómez Sánchez. Cuban, network engineer, member of the Board of Directors of the Anti-Communist Movement and Freedom Defenders (MADL). Based in Tampa, Florida.

For attribution: “Rafael A. Gómez Sánchez, network engineer and member of the MADL Board of Directors”.

What I can speak about with authority

I work in networking and information security, and I write about where that craft meets repression in Cuba. Specifically:

  • ETECSA technical censorship: how a website is blocked in Cuba, which methods are used, and why the user never sees a notice.
  • Internet shutdowns: what technically happened on July 11, 2021, what the routing data shows, and why a country with one operator has one switch.
  • The legal framework of digital repression: Decree-Law 370, Decree-Law 35 with Resolution 105, and the 2022 Penal Code, with documented cases and sentences.
  • Circumvention tools: what actually works, what is oversold, and why most of the security advice in circulation does not match the real risk a Cuban runs.
  • Exile activism: the experience of documenting events and organizing from outside.

Available in Spanish and English.

How to verify who I am

You do not have to take any of this on my word. All of it can be checked independently:

  • Member of the Board of Directors (Officer) of MADL, recorded in the 2026 Amended Annual Report filed with the Florida Division of Corporations on July 7, 2026. Board of Directors
  • MADL Organization Inc., 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 41-4208008, Sunbiz Doc. N26000001625. ProPublica · Sunbiz
  • My technical blog, with my own guides and analysis: itrafa.com
